The National Association of Settlement Purchasers (NASP) hosted its 2006 "Affiliate Member Conference" at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on October 19-20, 2006.
An earlier S2KM blog post (titled: "NASP Conference-1"):
- Provides a summary plus commentary about the NASP conference; and
- Identifies learning resources for structured settlement transfers (aka factoring).
Patrick Hindert, S2KM's blog author, was a guest speaker at the NASP conference addressing "How the Primary Structured Settlement Market Views Factoring". This presentation included two concept maps as hardcopy handouts. The concept maps, developed for S2KM by Barbara Bowen of See What You Know, are now posted on the Internet:
Each concept map includes embedded links plus embedded sub-concept maps.
Structured settlement market definitions:
- Primary Market - The "primary" structured settlement market consists of stakeholder involved in the original sale of structured settlement products including annuities, trusts and reinsurance. These stakeholders create the structured settlement funding in the context of resolving a personal injury claim.
- Secondary Market - The "secondary" structured settlement market consists of stakeholders involved in the transfer or purchase (aka factoring) of structured settlement payment rights created as part of a personal injury settlement or periodic payment judgment.
Additional resources: Following the NASP conference, The Legal Broadcast Network (LBN) has published a series of informative podcast interviews about structured settlement factoring issues. Accessible on both The Settlement Channel and The Factoring Channel, these LBN podcasts feature:
- Mark Wahlstrom and Matt Bracy discussing "Brokers' Roles in Factoring"; and
- Matt Bracy and Jeffrey Hartley discussing "Factoring and Bankruptcy".
